MEMORY THREE/SKILL TWO

MEMORY: Katea (and untold other Claymores)'s Awakening being useless; Jean refusing to Awaken
nebulous timeline placement; encompasses feelings/events during "The Witch's Maw" and "Purgatory of the Deepest Depths" (Claymore Scenes 41 - 49) and some time after

This isn't so much a concrete memory as it is a feeling of "awww, this isn't working" in regards to - some of the events she remembered last memory, in fact. She was very clearly working towards a plan and it was disappointing but not disheartening that it wasn't working out; there was no sense of "I AM UPSET THIS ISN'T WORKING" but a definite "oh well, if you don't first succeed, you're just using the wrong ingredients, but the principle's still sound!"

In other words it's a whole lot of "gosh you people are incompetent, good thing I'm not feeling too picky". (When I said "trivial" negative I wasn't kidding. :/)

I am handwaving specifics, but I would find it difficult to believe Jean's group was the only Claymore group she dealt with; this memory carries that awareness, and probably some exact details that Riful won't bother to share with anyone because it's the second verse and it's the same as the first, blah blah blah, and also the memories are still isolated from their surrounding context - she just knows there's a point to all of this, so ... torturing people = a-okay by Rifulmorals now, for sure. Not that she needed the encouragement, really, but now it really is going to be "oh, if I think it might be useful for you" then yes, she's gonna do it. aaaaaah.

OTOH this does come with the specific memory that the girl in hr last memory - "Jean" - somehow pulled back from the Awakening after all the work she'd done on her, not that she remembers it's called that yet, and that this was briefly saddening - but she doesn't remember how or why or what could have caused that. She has a vague sense from the certainty of her last memory that this shouldn't be possible, and all in all IT IS A MYSTERY but one she simply cannot solve yet. So she'll worry about it later!

in sum:

+20 more UNSAFETY
+20 less likely to care about minimal planning/improvisational tendencies

SKILL: SURVIVAL SKILLS

Like a lot of Riful's "mundane" skillsets, this one's actually kind of beefy. Not so beefy as it really needed splitting into separate skillsets, but it's still a fair bit. A lot of this is actually useless info for her, since she doesn't actually need it or pay attention to it very often, even though canonically its unlikely she doesn't know it ...

WHAT IT IS, then, is:
-HOW TO BE RESOURCEFUL which is ... what this all really boils down to in the end - she has gained like +50 to her "thinking on her feet" toolbox. It's like - if you can think of something that's useful for HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE WILD she probably has at least a basic but solid knowledge of it now. But in some more specific detail --
-how to start a fire with sticks or a piece of rock if she can get her hands on the right kind
-how to dispose of waste and the understanding that it should be disposed of
-what counts as GOOD GROUND COVER TO SLEEP ON
-rudimentary knowledge in how to gut, skin, and cook game - in other words it'll still have feathers/fur on it and it'll be a little chewy but it'll be edible ... basically imagine the kind of thing you'd learn after surviving on your own for the likely few months it took for civilization to find you (in this case, being the Organization), that's what she knows how to do now. in other words, theoretically she knows how to cook things! theoretically. they will not be very tasty. she will not care. the lack of caring is also a survival skill.
-this is also the completely useless addenda of THE KINDS OF THINGS A FEUDAL-MEDIEVAL LITTLE GIRL MIGHT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT HOW TO SURVIVE, GROWING UP IN A TINY VILLAGE which are not much but are things like drawing water from a well, how often you'd need to do chores, etc. - things Riful will know how to do now for sure but most of which even a few days in Aather would've taught her how to do anyway if she'd been put on any team besides Sterling because Sterling are special snowflakes

WHAT THIS MEANS for Riful is ... not a whole lot, actually! It'll make her more perceptive of her surroundings in games that switch up scenery on the players, and it'll make her likely to do things like actually INVESTIGATING THE FOREST to see what's in it rather than just her past sort of disinterested "well isn't this neat" explorations, but ultimately a lot of these things are things Riful already doesn't have much interest in - knowing how to rig up food so it doesn't kill her doesn't have much point to her when none of it tastes like anything; she'll be less likely to just straight up eat bits of animal raw, maybe, but then again maybe not. Either way when she eats ... which is not exactly often, although typically when she does she gluts herself ... she gets food from the Sterling kitchen most of those times, and probably swipes other people's stuff every so often anyway, so whatever, idk my bff Sterling?

Quite frankly the most immediately useful thing here from Riful's perspective is WHAT COUNTS AS GOOD STUFF TO SLEEP ON - while she'd already made some solid headway on figuring out stuff like that in Aather, now she kind of can guess and will just be experimenting with resting in new places for the heck of it - JUST TO SEE IF HER BODY STILL THINKS THEY'RE TERRIBLE PLACES TO SLEEP, more or less. But chances are now she's going to drag like, fistfuls of suitable brush into her room in the Knightcave to sleep on. (I assume Sterling members get a bed. Riful: STILL NOT ACTUALLY SLEEPING IN THAT BED.)

... I am not discussing what Riful's skill-locked body does to the stuff it digests. (I do, actually, have theories on what a yoma body does to the human flesh it eats, but idwant to get into that just yet.) But wherever she's pooping, she's doing it in a more sensible fashion now.

Oh wait I guess SITUATIONAL AWARENESS is one of the things that is included in this, too. It mans she's more aware of her surroundings - if you're around and you step on something crunchy she'll know where you are, that kind of thing. It's just natural peripheral consciousness and it's the kind that comes from expecting things to come at you in the middle of the night on a fairly regular basis. (Note that I said expecting, not that they actually did. That came later, and comes bundled in the COMBAT EXPERIENCE skillset.)

Buut yes. It's a beefy set of skills that don't amount to a hill of beans in terms of really doing much, because of how Riful's situation in Aather has ended up. It gives her more surety and confidence, and sure it makes her more actually competent, but these aren't skills she really visibly expresses much, if at all. This does at least mean they are there when she needs them now, though, and I might be able to churn out some post ideas off this, too. IT'S A LOT OF USELESS KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO DO SHIT, I'M SURE I CAN COME UP WITH SOME EXCUSE TO WORK THIS INTO A POST. I feel bad because a lot of this is just stuff Riful will be like ":O now I know this" at and they aren't ... particularly things she'll share with the class unless prompted. idk.

It is, at least, a good skill to get back with her more pronounced tendency to just wing it, though - it means she's likely to ride a more highly-evolved form of the Bad Decision Dinosaur when she decides to play silly buggers on a whim, at any rate.
